June 5, 2010: Francesca Schiavone d. Samantha Stosur, 6-4, 7-6 (2)

Francesca Schiavone poured passion into her play and kissed the red clay as if it were a long-lost friend to celebrate an emotional victory. In a spirited display of all-court acumen, the 17th seed played with grit and grace to become the first Italian woman to win a Grand Slam singles title.

It was a gut-wrenching loss for Stosur, who had knocked off three current or former world No. 1s—she snapped four-time French Open champion Justine Henin's 24-match Roland Garros winning streak in the fourth round, saved a match point against Serena Williams in the quarters, and annihilated three-time semifinalist Jelena Jankovic in the semis—to carry a WTA-best 20-2 clay-court record into the final.

Stosur had won four of five prior meetings with Schiavone, including a 6-4, 6-2 triumph in the first round of the 2009 French Open, but the underdog shrewdly used her variety of spins and speeds and fearlessly took the net away from her opponent, a four-time Grand Slam doubles champion. Schiavone won 14 of 15 points at net, often delivering drop volleys short and leaving Stosur swinging in vain at red dust.

Eighteen days shy of her 30th birthday, Schiavone whipped a topspin backhand that rattled off Stosur's racquet on championship point. An emotionally expressive player, she started the day in tears of fear over the final and ended it singing her lungs out in joy.

"I felt many emotions this morning," Schiavone said afterward. "I was crying and I couldn't take the car. I said (to my coach), 'You go coach to play.' I tried to stay focused on my play, to just play and to enjoy, to really enjoy from the heart. When I was younger always dreaming to win this tournament and now it's time to enjoy it."
