Wow. I’m still getting letters about my post last week on the Willy Cañas doping suspension, and my speculations on the fact that now four members of his generation have been suspended (the others were Guillermo Coria, Juan Ignacio Chela, and Mariano Puerta). Here’s an interesting one from someone calling herself Margaret E.:
Oscar, one of my regular correspondents, has also weighed in, writing:
Oscar is an Argentine.
Then there was J. Buser, who wrote:
Yes, J. Buser, you are absolutely right. I am a media puppet of the ATP and together we loathe Argentina and all its players! It’s obvious in everything I’ve ever written and the ATP’s ever done (why isn’t there a Grand Slam in South America? Huh? Huh?).
In fact, the ATP was formed in the 1970s, at just about the time that the first great Argentine player of the pro era, Guillermo Vilas, was developing his game (you can look it up!).
Clearly, the ATP was conceived as a response to the threat that Argentines were going to take over tennis.
You got us, bang to rights. I myself was a missile-guidance systems designer at the time, but when I saw that Argentina was going to be producing good tennis players, I decided to throw in the towel as a rocket scientist and become a media puppet so I could facilitate the ATP’s agenda to discredit all things Argentine!
Now you know it all . . .
