When returning serve, watch the spot where the server hits the ball to pick it up more quickly. In baseball, the batter looks at the spot where the pitcher releases the ball because it provides the earliest indication of the ball’s direction and spin. Because most servers hit the ball in the same spot every time, do the same when returning serve. Watching the serving motion is distracting, and it is easy for the returner to lose sight of the ball or forget about reading the spin. To find the correct spot to watch, look where the server hits the ball during the warm-up.
