With the destination of the Davis Cup determined, the professional tennis season has come to a close. Thus, we begin our look back at 2017, a memorable year on and off the court. Our Top 10 On-Court Moments, and our Top 10 Off-Court Moments, will remind you of everything that transpired.
Some former retirees produced big waves in the women's game this season.
Teenage phenom Mirjana Lucic-Baroni had to flee Croatia to get away from her abusive father, and then had to stop playing because of lack of funds. It all paid off this season, when she found herself in the Australian Open semifinals.
Timea Bacsinszky was working a hotel desk when she decided to return to the game, and has now made her second French Open semifinal. Anastasija Sevastova had also quit the game before coming back. The Latvian defeated Maria Sharapova to reach the quarterfinals of the US Open.
Ashleigh Barty retired as a teenager and turned to cricket before deciding to return. Starting the season ranked below 300, she's now in the Top 20 in singles. Kateryna Bondarenko finished another season in the Top 100 since having her first child and returning to tour.
A pair of former Top 10 players also returning with kids in tow—Vera Zvonareva and Patty Schnyder, both in their thirties—are back in the Top 200.
And with that success, it's no surprise either that more and more retired players are picking up their racquets again.
