With the destination of the Davis Cup determined, the professional tennis season has come to a close. Thus, we begin our look back at 2017, a memorable year on and off the court. Our Top 10 On-Court Moments, and our Top 10 Off-Court Moments, will remind you of everything that transpired.
All the injuries among the top men paved the way for a new group to go deep and move up in the rankings.
Most of the current Top 10 reached career highs. Grigor Dimitrov got to No. 3 with a win at the ATP Finals and a Masters title, in addition to reaching the Australian Open semifinals, No. 4 Alexander Zverev won two Masters, and No. 8 Jack Sock also won a Masters—the biggest titles of their careers so far. Dominic Thiem and Marin Cilic both climbed to No. 4, spending the entire season Top 10 in the rankings. David Goffin, who reached the ATP Finals final, also finished in the Top 10, as did Pablo Carreno Busta, who reached the semifinals of the US Open.
A couple of veterans had career runs. Kevin Anderson reached his first Grand Slam final at the US Open, while Sam Querrey reached back-to-back Grand Slam semis. Juan Martin del Potro and Nick Kyrgios occasionally took their big games to the big names.
But these breakthroughs were at a secondary level. At the top, it was still two members of the Big Four—Nadal and Federer—in command
