1. The 19-year-old Bianca Andreescu won her first match since Roland Garros, where she first attempted to return from injury but withdrew in the second round. Andreescu, who suffered a small shoulder tear earlier this year,made a winning return in Toronto with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over Eugenie Bouchard.

2. Radu Albot had moments of frustration in his Montreal opener against Frenchman Gilles Simon, but the world No. 39 pulled out a 6-2, 6-4 victory. Albot, who won his first ATP title earlier this season on hard courts in Delray Beach, will look to continue his run against Guido Pella.

3. Felix Auger-Aliassime battled past countryman Vasek Pospisil, 6-2, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (3), in his rollercoaster opener in Montreal. The 18-year-old Canadian will seek revenge in his second-round bout with Milos Raonic. The world No. 21 went down to Raonic in their only meeting at 2018 Indian Wells, but has made significant improvements in his game since then.

4.  Victoria Azarenka ran through her first-round match in her customized Nikes. The Belarusian defeated Camila Giorgi, 6-2, 6-2, in one hour and 12 minutes to advance in Toronto. Azarenka's shoes have "Leo" printed near the back, in recognition of her two-year-old son. Azarenka will face Dayana Yastremska on Wednesday.

5. Carla Suarez Navarro defeated seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams, 6-4, 6-2, in Toronto's opening round on Tuesday. This was the Spaniard's first win over Williams in more than four years (2015 Miami quarterfinals). The world No. 26 will face No. 16 Anett Kontaveit in the  second round.
