Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is withdrawing from the BNP Paribas Open, having recently told French press he has sickle cell disease.

The Frenchman said he was withdrawing from the tournament in an interview with French Eurosport.

Tsonga initially told L'Equipe about his condition before the Australian Open, but said that it does not affect him unless he is flying.

"When I fly, it takes me two, three days to recovery, to be good physically," he said. "It was just five years ago it was diagnosed. In everyday activities, it doesn't stop me from doing anything."
