Twitter Watch: Oct. 11

Has Gangnam danced its way over the shark yet? You could make a case, a very good case, that it has. But before it landed on the other side, tennis got in a few last moves on Twitter this week.

First to make the rounds was this video of Novak Djokovic having the trophy in Beijing torn from his reluctant hands so he could whip it Gangnam-style with the ball kids.

Then, a few hours later, there came this Tweet from Laura Robson from the same city:

@laurarobson5

This is what we do in our time off... Gangnam Style featuring some special guests :)

See the video here. It's worth it just to catch Sam Stosur dancing in an elevator. Not sure I saw that one coming...

Tennis promoter Pete Holterman was in a more informative mood on the first day of the men's Masters in Shanghai:

‏@HolterMedia

Federer, Djokovic, Nadal and Murray have won a combined 62 Masters 1000 titles. All other active players have combined to win 16.

And 16 goes down to 12 when Juan Carlos Ferrero officially retires next month. It really is a four-man world, and the rest of us are just living—or losing—in it.

If you were looking for a good way to describe Victoria Azarenka’s play against Maria Sharapova in Beijing this past weekend, your best bet may have been Maria’s old coach, Nick Bollettieri:

@NickBollettieri

On both the mens and ladies tour no one has ever beaten the backboard azarenka is close to beating the backboard she is on fire

That about sums it up.

Andy Roddick has been known for his head-scratching musical taste in the past—his wife, Brooklyn Decker, outed him a few years ago for having Rick Astley on his iPod. But most of his fans were scratching their heads even harder at this Tweet from A-Rod last week:

‏@andyroddick

Really excited Backstreet Boys are getting back together. I know it's lame, but I've always loved them.

The tweet was favorited 503 times, and even received a favorable response from the Backstreet Boys themselves: “Thanks! We’ve always been fans of you, too. Let us know when we can play a game of doubles?”

But when the Tweets got more Dada—“I like turtles”—most of us started to wonder if this was the real Andy Roddick manning his Twitter account. No, it turned out, it wasn’t. The culprit? Brooklyn, again.

Besides thrashing the competition in Beijing, Victoria Azarenka showed a surprising knowledge of U.S. sports with this tweet:

‏@vika7

We talking about practice.... Not a game,not a game... We talking about practice maaannnn

Yes, she talkin' about Allen Iverson, who appeared on court—surreally, it must be said—for a photo op with Vika and Sharapova. See the three of them here.

What’s on your bucket list? Marriage? Kids? Making a million bucks? Owning your own Pizza Hut? Me, I’ve always wanted someone to make a likeness of me from Legos. So you can understand how jealous I was when Caroline Wozniacki sent out this tweet, with photo attached:

@CaroWozniacki

Busy day today! Had a Lego figure made of me and put in Legoland.

That's toy Caro at the top of the page.

Muzzard looked very good in taking out the Dog in his 1st match of the week and will do the same vs Steps in the quaters

I include this for two reasons. (1) Because every tennis Twitter list must include at least one tweet from Brad Gilbert; and (2) Because I like to imagine someone outside the sport trying to make heads or tails of it:

"Um, who or what is a Muzzard? And how did he, she, or it 'look very good' while having his first match with his Dog...?"

You never know what your going to get from kids these days, do you? I leave you with the proof, from two young American players, Sloane Stephens and CoCo Vandeweghe, who offered two very different sentiments to their Twitter followers last week. I think you have to admire the wisdom of one, and the honesty of the other:

Good things come to those who wait. Greater things come to those who hustle

The Waterboy is on!! One of my all time favorite movies!
