Hi folks, it's Sony Ericcson Open time!  I love this tournament, and not just because it is exceedingly well-run, takes place on one of the most beautiful islands along the eastern seaboard, and because it features the top men and women tennis players in the world, all right in my backyard.

Ok, I guess that is why I love it.

Anyway, they have been playing qualification matches the last few days, as the tournament proper doesn't start until Wednesday.  Monday around lunchtime I headed out from my office in downtown Miami, and happened to catch some top-notch talent in action, mere feet from me -- John Isner, Oliver Rochus, Taylor Dent, Amer Delik, Donald Young, Robert Kendrick, Larcherde Brito, Bremond, Vania King etc.

What's not to love?

I watched Kendrick defeat Young 6-2, 6-4.  This was a battle of serves, Kendrick (who has one) and Young (who needs one).  Young's second serve is particularly vulnerable, and indeed Young wound up giving up the match on his own serve.  That led him to hit a ball clear out of Court 2, where it probably landed in nearby Biscayne Bay and is now heading north with the Gulfstream currents.  Maybe he can retrieve it when he shows up in New York for the US Open.

The draw looks pretty interesting, too. First-rounders include Baghdatis against Gulbis, and Querry against Muller. Nadal could face Murray in the semis, and Fed could face Roddick in the quarters The Williams sisters, always a presence at their "home tournament," could meet in the semis.

I'll be out there again today, and you can follow my "tweets" on the action I see here.
