Two-time French Open champion Sharapova withdraws from Roland Garros

Maria Sharapova once described her play on clay as a "cow on ice." But as time went along, the cow turned into a French Open champion—twice—and the ice became one of Sharapova's favorite playing surfaces.

So you can understand Sharapova's disappointment when she announced on Wednesday, via Instagram Story, that she was pulling out of Roland Garros due to a shoulder injury:

Sharapova has played just three tournaments this year, all in January. After reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open, the five-time Grand Slam champion won her opener in St. Petersburg but withdrew from her next match. She hasn't played since.

On an already dreary day in the tennis world, this news made it a little gloomier.
