NEW YORK (AP) A look at the U.S. Open, the year's last Grand Slam tennis tournament:

Surface: Hard courts.

Site: The USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Schedule: The two-week tournament starts Monday. The women's singles final is Sept. 10; the men's singles final is Sept. 11.

2010 Men's Singles Champion: Rafael Nadal of Spain.

2010 Women's Singles Champion: Kim Clijsters of Belgium.

Last Year: Nadal beat Novak Djokovic of Serbia 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 for his first U.S. Open title, becoming the seventh man in tennis history to complete a career Grand Slam. Clijsters won her second consecutive U.S. Open championship and third overall by beating Vera Zvonareva 6-2, 6-1 in the final.

No Defense: Clijsters withdrew from this year's tournament because of a stomach muscle injury.

Key Statistic: 57-2 - Djokovic's record this season, the best start since John McEnroe went 59-2 to begin 1984. Djokovic has won nine titles, including Wimbledon and the Australian Open. He is 33-1 on hard courts.

She's Back: Serena Williams returns to the U.S. Open after missing the 2010 tournament. She was sidelined for nearly a full year because of a series of health scares; since coming back to the tour in June, she has won two titles.

Prize Money: Total is $23.7 million, with a record $1.8 million each to the men's and women's singles champions.
