Hsieh Su-Wei cannot be stopped on the major stage this year!

Partnering Wang Xinyu, the 37-year-old is now 16-0 in women’s doubles matches at the Grand Slam tournaments this season following the duo’s victory Wednesday. The two dashed the hopes of home favorites Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula, 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-4, in the quarterfinals of the US Open for their fourth three-set victory of the event.

In a topsy-turvy opening set, Hsieh and Wang went down 3-0, surged back with five straight games, were broken when trying to close it out, then claimed the final six points of the tie-break.

The No. 3 seeds made sure their early break advantage didn’t go to waste in set two. Holding from 15-30 to arrive at 5-3, Gauff and Pegula pounced with a second break to force a decider.

This year, Hsieh and Wang are 10-0 at majors and 2-2 elsewhere.

The Roland Garros champions regrouped early in the third. Moving ahead 2-1, the two won a crucial game with clutch play. Down 0-40, Hsieh and Wang went on to stave off six break points to consolidate their break, and soon stretched it to two. The double break evaporated when Gauff and Pegula dug in to erase the gap for 4-4, but the Americans dropped serve at love in the following game and couldn’t extend the encounter after forcing deuce.

In late April, Hsieh returned to the WTA Tour at the Mutua Madrid Open after taking an 18-month break from the sport. Six weeks later, she was back standing in the winners’ circle after triumphing at the French Open alongside Wang.

That fairytale run was followed up with another stunning display. During the grass-court swing, Hsieh reunited with Barbora Strycova in the Czech’s Wimbledon farewell to celebrate a second trophy together at the All England Club. The former doubles world No. 1 is seeking her seventh major title overall and first on hard courts.

Gauff and Pegula finished at 13-3 in majors this year after reaching the semifinals of the season’s first two Grand Slam events. Wang avenged her Australian Open second-round defeat to the U.S. tandem when she competed alongside Moyuka Uchijima.

On Thursday evening, Gauff will seek a place in the women’s singles final against Karolina Muchova in a rematch of their Cincinnati clash won by the Delray Beach, Fla. resident.
