Amelie Mauresmo was crushed by Flavia Pennetta, 6-3, 6-0, and DInara Safina progressed over Anna-Lena Groenefeld, 7-5. 6-0. Pennetta is in her first US Open quraterfinal; Safina is in her second. Rafael Nadal fought off a convincing challenge from Sam Querrey, 6-2. 5-7, 7-6, 6-3, and is in the quarterfinals here for the second time.
