The USTA announces that it will host a new U.S. Open Wild Card Playoff into the 2010 tournament, which begins in less than two weeks. Eight men and eight women have been invited to compete for the two wild cards (one each) from August 18-20 at the USTA Training Center Headquarters in Boca Raton, Fla.
The USTA will announce 12 of its wild cards on Tuesday and Wednesday. Most of the players invited to compete in Boca Raton are younger; there is only one male, Tim Smyczek, with a Top 200 ranking, and two females, Madison Brengle and Alison Riske, inside the Top 200. Since 2007, the USTA has held playoffs to determine wild cards into the Australian and French Opens.—Matthew Cronin
