Donald Young is being coached by the USTA’s Mike Sell during the tour’s current swing through Asia, TENNIS.com has learned. Young, who fought with USTA Player Development in the spring after he was not granted a Roland Garros wild card, has since mended fences with the organization. He reached the fourth round of a major for the first time at the 2011 U.S. Open and is ranked a career high No. 55. He advanced to the second round of the Thailand Open on Tuesday when his opponent, Igor Andreev, retired in the second set.
After Young’s parents agreed with the USTA at the U.S. Open that the organization take a lead role in his coaching, Donald asked to be coached by Sell, the former coach of Monica Seles, whom coached Young earlier in his career and is said to know his game the best.
Young’s mother Ilona did travel with him to Thailand, but is said to be there for support and nothing more.
In other coaching news, Amercian teenager Jack Sock, who recently turned pro and won the U.S. Open mixed doubles with Melanie Oudin, has rehired Mike Wolf as his coach after splitting with him prior to the U.S. Open. Sock will play USTA Challengers in Sacramento and Tiburon, California in the next two weeks.
