MELBOURNE, Australia (AP)—Venus Williams has won her first-round match at the Australian Open, beating Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic 6-2, 6-2.
Williams, who wore a short canary yellow dress with slits up the front, is the sixth-seeded player at the Australian Open and is aiming to improve on her upset loss in the second round last year at Melbourne Park to Carla Suarez Navarro.
Venus will be joined by her top-seeded sister Serena in the second round. The Williams sisters will again team up in doubles, hoping to defend their Australian Open doubles title.
