Serena, who defeated Wozniacki by a 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (6) count a day later, noted in a press conference that she'd prefer her own life story to play out rather splendidly as a Broadway musical in lieu of more dramatic treatment on television or film. About watching the final round-robin match between Ana Ivanovic and Simona Halep that would decide whether Serena made the semifinals, she said it played out "like a drama on Netflix," with Halep ultimately winning the lone set that moved Serena on to the next round. Ultimately, it also allowed Serena the chance to stare down Halep herself again—that in the final.
When a reporter inquired about her rating of the Singapore event on a scale of 1 to 10, Serena said, "My first album I ever got in my life was Mariah Carey, so the fact that they provided tickets to Mariah Carey, I give it an 11."
She's going to need to take her own performance to 11 to turn around her results against Halep in this week's WTA Finals. After a round-robin drubbing in which she won just two games (her worst loss since 1998), Serena seeks to resurrect her fortunes in the championship round against a diminutive but obviously formidable foe, one who relished, as did her coach, the sweet taste of victory against Serena just days ago.
