For decades, the Volvo Car Open has been a popular stop for WTA players and a favorite destination for tennis enthusiasts. Now, the beloved tournament in Charleston, S.C. is taking a major step by renovating its Volvo Car Stadium court to greater enhance the first-class experience in the years to come.

On Wednesday, Charleston LLC announced its plans for an extensive revamp to its tennis facilities that will also enable the venue to have proper infrastructure in place for hosting distinguished musical entertainment. The outline is highlighted by a multi-story “Stage House” accommodating player wellness facilities, including premium locker rooms, physical therapy and exercise space, as well as offering shade on the south side thanks to a new canopy structure.

“We’ve come up with a plan that maintains [the stadium's] intimacy while also modernizing the facility,” said Ben Navarro, who along with wife Kelly, is funding the project as a donation to the city. “We are excited to be working with the city to re-imagine Volvo Car Stadium and create an exceptional space for locals and visitors to experience world-class entertainment in Charleston.”

And fret not, tennis fans, for the 2021 tournament is moving forward. Its inviting Althea Gibson Club Court will be equipped to welcome 3,000 fans per session in a temporary stadium environment, while adhering to health and safety guidelines. In June, tournament organizers successfully hosted a closed-environment team event after being forced to cancel the 2020 Volvo Car Open due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are beyond excited with what this state of the art, world-class facility will become as a result of this renovation,” said tournament director Bob Moran. “We can’t imagine a better way of celebrating our 50th year of tennis in 2022 and look forward to showing off the new facilities to our players, fans, partners and volunteers.”

Renovations are anticipated to be completed in the fall of 2021, and construction is subject to final city approvals. Tickets for next year’s event will go on sale November 13.
