WATCH: Muguruza, Venus receive trophies, give speeches at Wimbledon

Garbine Muguruza defeated Venus Williams, 7-5, 6-0, on Saturday for her first Wimbledon title and second Grand Slam championship.

After saving two set points in the first set, the Spaniard rallied to take the opener and then dominated the second set, handing the American a bagel to complete a decisive victory.

When the match concluded, as is the custom, the two finalists took Centre Court. Muguruza, the champion, was awarded the Venus Rosewater Dish and Williams was given the runner-up trophy.

“She’s such an incredible player,” Muguruza said of Venus, a five-time champion, in her on-court interview after the match. “I grew up watching her play … I feel incredible to play her here.”

Asked if Muguruza had a message for her coach, Sam Sumyk, who couldn’t be there on Saturday, the world No. 15 held up her plate and said with a laugh, “Here it is.”

That, predictably, got a roar from the adoring crowd.

“I want to thank my team that is here,” the 2016 French Open champion added. “Conchita [Martinez], my physio, fitness trainer … This is not only me. It’s all the teamwork. Finally!”

That “finally” was likely in reference to 2015, when Muguruza lost to Venus’ younger sister in the final here.

37-year-old Venus, who was playing her ninth final at the Championships, was clearly disappointed with the end result, but she spoke from the heart—as she always does—and exhibited the class sportsmanship that we’ve come to expect from her after all these years.

“Congratulations, Garbine,” Venus told her opponent in front of the Centre Court crowd. “I know how hard you work and I’m sure this means so much to you and your family. Well done today. Beautiful.

“Thank you to my team, who’s been here for me day in and day out, and my family as well. I love you guys. A lot of beautiful moments in the past couple of weeks.”

The living legend also had a message for her sister, Serena, who’s currently off the tour as she awaits the birth of her first child.

“I miss you,” Venus said simply. “I tried my best to do the same things you do, but I think that there will be other opportunities. I do.”

The crowd erupted as Venus, not so subtly, promised that she would be back and made it clear that she isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. She walked off the court and waved to the crowd as another memorable women’s tournament at Wimbledon was put to rest.
