WATCH: Wawrinka wins third major in New York
The Swiss beat defending champion Novak Djokovic, 6-7 (1), 6-4, 7
A lot happened in the men's final on Sunday between Stan Wawrinka and Novak Djokovic. While his post-win celebration was fairly muted, the enthusiasm came out when he got his hands on the US Open trophy for the first time.
The 31-year-old also won over a lot of hearts by mentioning 9/11 (the final was held on the 15th anniversary).
The congratulations started pouring in right away; this message from the man Wawrinka beat in the quarterfinals stood out.
Wawrinka being the last man standing is made all the more impressive by the fact that he was nearly upset in the third round by Daniel Evans.
He remains undefeated in Grand Slam finals.
