Stan Wawrinka has withdrawn from next week's ATP event in Metz citing fatigue.

Wawrinka is contesting this week's Davis Cup semifinal against Italy in Geneva, playing both singles and doubles.

The top seed's decision had tournament officials describing themselves as "extremely disappointed and angry." Wawrinka had an agreement with the  event, and was used to promote the tournament as well.

"The tournament directors did not welcome the news at all of the withdrawal of Stan Wawrinka," said organizers in a statement. "He notified us simply by email that he would not be competing as he is fatigued."

Defending champion Gilles Simon will also not be playing because of a wrist injury.
