KAZ-SUI 3-0(5-0): Kazakhstan will make its debut in the World Group next year, while Switzerland drops back into zonal play for just the second time in 16 years thanks to a 3-0 victory by the Kazkhs against the Swiss in their Davis Cup playoffs.

The Swiss were without Roger Federer, who skipped the tie to focus on getting ready for the fall season. Wawrinka, who made the quarterfinals at the U.S. Open, was drafted for both singles and doubles duty this weekend.

Kazakhstan was fielding a team of non-natives, having recently drafted the service of several players who formerly played for Russia or other parts of the former Soviet Union.

The Kazkhs clinched the tie when Andrey Golubev and Yuriy Schukin defeated Yves Allegro and Wawrinka 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 in the doubles.

"Before the Davis Cup tie, we were practicing for the doubles match for the last two or three months," said Golubev. "It was our dream to make it to the World Group, and now we have made it. I am so happy."

In the opening singles, Golubev had won 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 against Marco Chuidinelli and Mikhail Kukushkin had defated Wawrinka 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-3.

GER-RSA 3-0(5-0): Germany secured its World Group berth for next year with a win over a South African team that was missing Kevin Anderson because of injury.

ROM-ECU 3-0 (5-0): Romania did the same by defeating Ecuador, which had only one Lapentti brother, the younger Giovanni, in action.
