PARIS—Despite her extended run of success over the past four years, world No. 1 Serena Williams remains surprised at her consistency. After missing nearly an entire year between 2010 and 2011 due to injury and illness, Williams returned and has since won 29 titles. Now 33, Williams owns 19 Grand Slam singles titles, including a win at the 2013 French Open.
Williams trails only Steffi Graf, who owns 22 majors, and Margaret Court, who won 24, on the all-time title count. “Do you know what's good about tennis?” asked Williams, who could face the former No. 1 Victoria Azarenka in the third round at Roland Garros. “Unlike basketball and football, you have four times a year to get to the Grand Slams to try and win one. You have four chances. That gives us a little bit more opportunity to try to get there, even though the competition every year is harder and harder and harder. There is still plenty of time. Honestly, if I get to 20, that would be great. If I get past that? That would be great. I think 19 is pretty awesome, too. I never thought I would be at 19. I never thought I would make it this far. Every day I feel like I'm living a dream.”
