When will Gauff play her Roland Garros first round?

Coco Gauff is set to kick off her 2024 Roland Garros campaign on Monday, May 27 against qualifier Julia Avdeeva.

The No. 3 seed will be making her fifth main-draw appearance in Paris, having finished runner-up in 2022 and reached the quarterfinals or better for the last three years.

What did Gauff achieve in 2023?

Gauff has been one of the best players on tour since last summer, when she turbo-charged her career by hiring acclaimed coach Brad Gilbert following a first-round exit at Wimbledon. She went on a tear through the North American summer hard-court swing, picking up titles in Washington, D.C. and Cincinnati—scoring a first win over world No. 1 Iga Swiatek en route to the latter—and stormed to her first Grand Slam victory at the US Open.

The wins earned her a second straight berth into the WTA Finals, where she qualified for the semifinals.

How has Gauff performed in 2024 so far?

Gauff began 2024 in the same way as she began 2023, playing the ASB Classic. As the defending champion, she eased into the final without dropping a set and rallied to defeat a resurgent Elina Svitolina to win the title for a second straight season.

Her undefeated start to 2024 ended in the semifinals of the Australian Open, where she lost to eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka. She has since reached two WTA 1000 semifinals, at the BNP Paribas Open and the Internazionali BNL d'Italia, where she enjoyed her best clay-court result of the season.

Where did Gauff land in the 2024 Roland Garros draw?

The 20-year-old is in the top half of the draw alongside top seed and defending champion Iga Swiatek, who defeated Gauff in the semifinals of Rome last week. Gauff lost to Swiatek in the finals of Roland Garros in 2022, which was her biggest Grand Slam result at the time.

Seeded third on the terre battue, Gauff is in the same quarter as No. 8 seed Ons Jabeur and No. 9 seed Jelena Ostapenko, who won Roland Garros in 2017.

The first seed Gauff can face is No. 30 Dayana Yastremska, who reached the Australian Open semifinals as a qualifier back in January.

Gauff will play Avdeeva third up on Court Suzanne-Lenglen on Monday.
