The 4th of July is usually a time for backyard barbecues and trips to the beach. But Live! with Regis and Kelly host Regis Philbin had other plans for his holiday weekend.

Philbin has attended the U.S. Open for 27 consecutive years, but this year he decided he wanted to be a part of the action. So the 78-year-old, who underwent triple bypass surgery three years ago, went to the 2010 U.S. Open ballperson tryouts last weekend.

Philbin showcased some decent speed and an above average throwing arm, but we won’t see him on Arthur Ashe Stadium anytime soon. Still, I’m sure he’ll get some camera time when he makes his yearly appearance at Flushing Meadows come late August.

Nice try, Reeg! Maybe next year.
