By TW Contributing Editor, Rosangel Valenti* Good morning all. Today at Wimbledon a mostly cloudy day is expected; where I live the sun is putting in an occasional appearance. So far in its history the existence of the Centre Court roof seems to have immunised the tournament against rain; as far as I know the only time it has been used to keep out wet weather in front of a live crowd was at the pre-tornament roof-opening exhibition event last year.
The roof saw its share of action yesterday, though, as the tennis kept going well into the night, following a long day during which both the number one and number three men's seeds were thoroughly tested. This was the latest finish we've seen so far on Centre Court, with the match finishing around 11 p.m.
The defending ladies champion, Serena Williams, will open proceedings on Centre Court today against Michelle Larcher de Brito. On many other days we might have expected to see Andy Murray play the second match on Centre Court, but instead he joins Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Caroline Wozniacki as one of the big names on Court 1. That's not as much of a banishment as it might sound - Court 1 is a big, atmospheric show court in its own right, and Murray has seen some good times there, not least his comeback-in-five-sets contribution to Great Britain's entry into the World Group in Davis Cup in September 2007. Maybe he will be hoping that it will take some of the media pressure off him, but that seems unlikely to happen. Even elements of the Scottish press have dubbed him 'Murray from Surrey' lately, which seems to be suggesting a feeling that he's underachieving in a way that (as some of the media saw it back then) only Tim Henman managed to do in recent years.
Matches are about to start, so as always, enjoy the day's tennis.
