NEW YORK (AP)—Wimbledon runner-up Vera Zvonareva of Russia overwhelmed 38th-ranked Andrea Petkovic of Germany 6-1, 6-2 Monday to reach the U.S. Open quarterfinals for the first time.

The No. 7-seeded Zvonareva’s one real hiccup came when she served for the match at 5-1 in the second set and was broken for the only time. But Zvonareva broke Petkovic right back at love in the next game, closing the match with a forehand return winner.

Zvonareva reached a Grand Slam final for the first time at Wimbledon in July, losing to Serena Williams.

Up next for Zvonareva is a match against No. 31 Kaia Kanepi of Estonia.
