Coco Gauff soars into first Roland Garros semifinal without dropping a set

On Tuesday at Roland Garros, Coco Gauff upstaged Sloane Stephens to reach her first major semifinal. A visual story:

Gauff came out the aggressor between the two in building a 5-2 lead…

… though she would get broken at 15 when serving for a one-set lead.

The 18-year-old recovered with a love hold and then with some help from Stephens—who made three unforced errors to open the 12th game—broke to take it 7-5.

Gauff continued to let it fly…

… matching Stephens with 12 forehand winners in the contest.

The No. 18 seed also kept Stephens to a 56% success rate at net by using her drop shot 12 times…

… and overcame six double faults in the second set, including two at 5-1, 30-0 to drop serve…

… by teeing off on her countrywoman’s second serve, taking 11 of 13 points en route to closing out a 7-5, 6-2 victory. Gauff has now won all 10 sets during her run.

With it, the past Paris junior champ avenged her 2021 US Open defeat and will be favored against Martina Trevisan, who eliminated Leylah Fernandez in three sets.
