BUENOS AIRES, Argentina -- Top-seeded David Ferrer of Spain defeated Maximo Gonzalez of Argentina 7-6 (7), 6-4 Tuesday to reach the second round of the Copa Claro clay-court tournament.

Ferrer is the two-time defending champion in Buenos Aires, and was runner up in 2010. He is trying to win his 21st ATP title.

Second-seeded Fabio Fognini of Italy also advanced, defeating Julian Reister of Germany 7-5, 6-2. Fognini won the Royal Guard Open on Sunday in Chile, the opening event on the Latin American clay-court swing.

No. 6 Robin Haase of the Netherlands moved on with a victory over Martin Alund of Argentina, 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-3, while winners in the first round included Leonardo Mayer of Argentina, Santiago Giraldo of Colombia and Filippo Volandri of Italy.
