KATOWICE, Poland (AP) Unseeded Stefanie Voegele of Switzerland upset sixth-seeded Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine 6-4, 6-0 on Monday to advance to the second round of the Katowice Open.

In another first-round match, ninth-seeded Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium eliminated Donna Vekic of Croatia 6-1, 6-4.

Next, Voegele will face Magda Linette of Poland or Ukraine wild card Anastasiya Shoshyna while Flipkens will play Andreea Mitu of Romania who came from a set down to beat Romina Oprandi of Switzerland 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.

Also on the opening day, Elizaveta Kulichkova of Russia defeated wild card Vera Lapko of Belarus 7-6 (4), 6-0 and Kristyna Pliskova of the Czech Republic beat Heather Watson of Britain 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
