Following her first Grand Slam title at the French Open, Garbine Muguruza says she wants to win more big titles and find the consistency that could take her to No. 1 in the world.

The 22-year-old, who reached her first Grand Slam final a year ago at Wimbledon, said she’s become more comfortable with handling the pressure that accompanied her breakthrough.

"Now what I am going to look for is to try and keep my level and forget about all this ‘I have to win’ and ‘Garbine has to win,’” she told reporters at the French Open after she topped Serena Williams in the final. "...The best players are consistent. There is no secret. You can’t be the best player if suddenly you play well and the next day you play badly.

"But it’s difficult to always perform well, to always go on the court and win and hit great shots. It takes a lot of time and [it’s] a long learning process."

Coming into the French Open, Muguruza had gotten past the quarterfinals at only two events this season. But she believes that her ability to manage her emotions is a positive step towards finding that consistency.

"I’m very happy because today I proved I can play really well, manage my stress and win against one of the best players in the world," she said on Saturday.

Muguruza also noted that her commanding performance in the final was also the product of learning and improving.

"It takes a lot of things, not only because you played well,” she said. “It’s a lot of experience, knowledge."

Her title at Roland Garros makes her the youngest Slam champion on the WTA tour, and the next goal for the big-hitting Spanish Venezuelan is to "win more tournaments, similar tournaments."

"I think I'm ambitious," she said. "I like to compete. I like to play against the best players. This is a source of motivation for me."

Despite having problems adjusting to her new status following Wimbledon, when she dropped three of her next four matches, Muguruza insists that she likes being a target on tour.

"I think all the top players are a little bit hunted,” she said. “I like being in this position. The other players are going to be looking to beat me."

Muguruza is now ranked second in the world, and she’s looking to reach the top spot.

"Of course I want to be No. 1," she said. "All the players want to be the No. 1 player ... But I'm not thinking about that now. I want to go on court and have the feeling [that] I dominated points."

The French Open was Muguruza’s first clay-court title, and just the third title of her career.
