Aside from last year’s Rio Olympics, the world No. 2 has never played in Latin America, either as a pro or a junior.

Djokovic kicked off the season with a title in Doha, where he defeated Andy Murray in the final. Later that month he was stunned by 117th-ranked Denis Istomin in the second round of the Australian Open.

The 12-time Grand Slam champion hasn’t played an ATP tournament since the Aussie Open, but he did play one Davis Cup match, a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, 1-0 victory over 21-year-old Daniil Medvedev on Feb. 3. Trailing two sets to one, Medvedev retired in the fourth set.

Djokovic joins a loaded field in Mexico. Rafael Nadal, Milos Raonic and Marin Cilic are scheduled to play, as is defending champion Dominic Thiem. Juan Martin del Potro, David Goffin, John Isner and Alexander Zverev will also be in the draw.
