Before Sam Querrey tries to follow up his dream run from Wimbledon – where he became the first American man to make a major semifinal since Andy Roddick in 2009 – at the US Open, the Southern California native will play his second season of Mylan World TeamTennis for Washington Kastles.

It’s an upbeat atmosphere that he can’t wait to be a part of. And, quite opposite from the quiet, stoic setting of Centre Court at SW19.

“It's fun to play on a team,” Querrey said in an interview with WTT.com earlier this season. “You're playing for yourself week in and week out, and to switch it up and play on a team… makes it kind of even more fun for me. Everyone buys in, everyone's cheering for each other, and everyone’s having fun on the road trips.”

The best American men in tennis at the current moment will be crisscrossing the country to play World TeamTennis this summer alongside Querrey, including John Isner, Jack Sock, Steve Johnson, Frances Tiafoe, Donald Young and 2016 Mylan WTT Male MVP Ryan Harrison in a summer of team battles.

That’s not to mention Bob and Mike Bryan playing in their 15th season, as well as former top U.S. men’s stars Andy Roddick and Mardy Fish trying to keep up with the young guns.

“The crowd aspect of WTT is great,” said Johnson, who plays for the Orange County Breakers, close to where he grew up. (Johnson helped the Breakers win their first match of the season Monday evening)

“Sometimes I think tennis matches can be a little too stuffy or a little too proper. It's fun. When you play for WTT crowds, you know it's somewhere you can make a little more noise, you have a lot more to get behind. I think it's great because you can really feed off the crowd's energy and the team's energy. With this format, you're never out of it. One good swing, one good set and you're right back in it.”

Tiafoe is one of the premier stars in a crop of rising young guns on the men’s side in the U.S. At 19 years old he’s been ranked a career-high No. 62 this summer, having won a pair of ATP Challenger events this spring.

He says his goal is to be inside the Top 50 by the end of the year, and that he’s trying his best to stay focused as the spotlight gets turned towards him as a potential next-big-thing in American tennis.

“You hear everyone talking, ‘This could be the next guy,’ and it only makes you want to work harder to not let them down and to prove that you are the next guy.”

Fans in and around the Washington, D.C. area will get the chance to see Tiafoe, himself a Maryland native, when he plays for an already-loaded Kastles roster that features Querrey, the Bryan brothers, Venus Williams and Martina Hingis. Tiafoe is set to make his home debut on Tuesday against the New York Empire.

“I'm happy to be in Washington, and obviously playing with a roster like that it's pretty special,” he said. “I've always wanted to play WTT. I've wanted to do it since I was a little kid. (Kastles owner) Mark Ein and I have been great friends so I'm happy he finally got me on board.”

That’s the magic of the WTT season for the American men and the entire crop of players who take part in the three weeks of summer fun: The team atmosphere provides a wanted break from the grind of tour life, sandwiched between Wimbledon and the US Open.

Johnson sees it as a chance for the top U.S. players to hone their games in time for the year’s final major – and perhaps make another step in breaking through against the “big four” that have dominated the men’s tour for much of the last decade.

“I think you've got four guys in the top 25 or so in the U.S. and we have a lot of good young kids, a lot of good tennis players coming up,” explained Johnson. “So I don't think it's far off, we just have to believe in ourselves and keep competing and working as hard as possible.”

Will one of them be the next big thing in tennis? Could be.

They’re also a crew of fun-loving, easy-going guys. Querrey has a new Frenchie dog, Lou, that has her own Instagram account, while Tiafoe calls himself one of the funniest guys on tour. Johnson, for his part, flourishes in the team setting having been a four-time NCAA team champion at USC.

And where is that sort of personality best showcased? On the Mylan World TeamTennis courts this summer, of course.
