Two Mylan World TeamTennis mainstays recorded dominant victories on Wednesday night, as the Philadelphia Freedoms swept the New York Empire on the road, while the Washington Kastles rebounded from the loss of the opening set to cruise to a victory over the visiting Orange County Breakers.

The teams’ victories were spearheaded by three Mylan WTT veterans — as Philadelphia’s Taylor Townsend won three sets and Martina Hingis and Anastasia Rodionova of the Kastles scored an emphatic women’s doubles victory to help turn the match around.

Check out the highlights of last night’s action below!

Philadelphia Freedoms def. New York Empire, 25-13

A sweep of all five sets helped the Freedoms earn their first victory in three matches this season — all of which came against the Empire.

Taylor Townsend had a hand in three of the five sets won by Philadelphia, as she partnered Sloane Stephens to a tiebreak win over Kirsten Flipkens and Maria Sanchez in the second set of the night, before teaming with Fabrice Martin for a 5-1 win in mixed doubles after halftime, and ending the match with an identical set in women’s singles.

“This is the third time in a row that we played this team, so I think that everyone was already pretty familiar with each other’s games,” said Townsend. “I think it was more about sticking to the strategy and just keeping it simple, which I think is what we did. I think we utilized the lineup a little better — they set up the lineup, but I think it worked well for everybody.”

Donald Young was also a key factor in the Freedoms’ win, as the lefty scored a tiebreak victory in men’s doubles alongside Fabrice Martin to begin the night, and followed that up with a 5-3 win over New York’s Mardy Fish.

“It’s great to get the first win for the team — everyone contributed to get the points,” Young said. “I was happy to play Mardy and get the win. It’s great when you get to play guys that were great, even though they don’t play [now], it feels good. It’s a pleasure, it really brings the intensity up — they’re bringing it and you want to bring it, and more importantly, you just want to win for the team.”

Washington Kastles def. Orange County Breakers, 22-15

After Martina Hingis dropped the opening match in mixed doubles alongside Treat Huey to Orange County’s Andreja Klepac and Ken Skupski, the Swiss legend knew that she and Anastasia Rodionova had to come up with something special in women’s doubles.

And that they did — as the two Kastles stalwarts overwhelmed Klepac and Yanina Wickmayer 5-1 in the second set to give the Kastles a lead they never relinquished en route to a 22-15 team win.

“After losing the mixed, I wanted to make up for it in [women’s] doubles, and [Rodionova] was a great trouper to help me out,” said the Swiss. “By winning that set 5-1, I think that kind of got the team going, and we got in the groove.”

Though the Kastles dropped a tiebreak in men’s doubles, a dominant second half in singles helped the home team score a victory. Madison Brengle rolled to a 5-1 set against the Breakers’ Wickmayer, before Frances Tiafoe scored a 5-3 win over Teymuraz Gabashvili to cap the night.

Added Rodionova: “[The win was] not on the two of us, it’s the whole atmosphere. We have great fans, great support, and the guys on the bench are really helping us.”
