Alexander Zverev had little trouble making it into the Citi Open semifinals after defeating Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals. He beat the Russian in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, and displayed a strong serve, along with aggressive baseline play that pushed Medvedev back, allowing for easy points and an ultimately swift win.

The beginning of the tournament was a slow start for the fifth seed, as he was facing down the barrel of defeat against Jordan Thompson in the second round, who forced him into a third set tiebreaker. However, the world No. 8 held, ultimately won that close call, and will play for a spot in his first final in Washington against the second seed, Kei Nishikori.
