On Wednesday, Kristyna Pliskova upset world No. 10 Petra Kvitova, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3, to earn the right to face Elena Vesnina in the third round of the Volvo Car Open in Charleston.
Kvitova was the second-seeded player in the field, and she defeated the less-accomplished Pliskova last year in Beijing, 6-3, 7-5 in the round of 64. With only that to draw back on, it seemed likely that Pliskova was heading towards a loss.
Match point from Pliskova's win over Kvitova in Charleston:
Vesnina, meanwhile, faced American Taylor Townsend in the second round of the Volvo Car Open. The 31-year-old had little trouble defeating the former top-ranked junior, winning 6-4, 6-1 to advance.
Now is when the tournament gets interesting, and this match will be the focal point of Thursday's slate. Vesnina has her eyes set on showing the world that she can compete in big tournaments again. A win in Charleston would prove just that, as this is an impressive field.
Pliskova, meanwhile, is hoping to build off of Wednesday's performance. The 26-year-old is currently ranked No. 77 in the world, but she was ranked as high as No. 35 back in July of 2017. She knows she is capable of topping that number, but she can't afford an early exit here.
