In her opening match in Dubai, world No. 3 Simona Halep earned a 7-6 (4), 6-4 victory over Eugenie Bouchard. Halep was coming off a runner-up finish at the Qatar Total Open in Doha, where she lost to Elise Mertens in the final.

The 27-year-old will next face Lesia Tsurenko for a spot in the quarterfinals. Tsurenko dominated Zhu Lin in her second-round match at this event, and she should be feeling pretty confident heading into the round of 16. But the Romanian has won all five of her matches against the Ukrainian, so Halep will be considered a heavy favorite to move on.

Halep made headlines earlier in the week by announcing her split with coach Thierry Van Cleemput. The two had only been working together for a couple of weeks, so it was surprising to see the partnership end so quickly.
