Rafael Nadal says the hand injury that kept him from playing on the third day of the Laver Cup had been bothering him since he arrived for the event.

"I felt it on the first day here, and it has been increasing," he said, adding that he had treatment the day of his first singles. "I had an injection because I wanted to be ready to play, and this morning it was worse, so I didn't think there was any point doing it again because it wasn't going to be 100 percent."

Playing his first event since winning the US Open, he defeated Milos Raonic on the second day of the Laver Cup, but withdrew from his singles against Nick Kyrgios and doubles with Roger Federer because of the injury.

Nadal will take a planned break to spend time with family and friends, with his wedding scheduled in four weeks. The No. 2 indicated that he still wants to play some events during the rest of the season.

"I hope this problem doesn't change my schedule or my goals,'' he said.

Nadal is next scheduled to play the Paris Masters.
