Former Wuhan winner Venus Williams and 2019 International Tennis Hall of Fame inductee Li Na caught up during a boat ride on the Yangtze River. Li went 3-0 against Williams in her career before retiring in 2014.

Fifth seed Petra Kvitova opened her quest for a third event title with a 7-6 (6), 6-3 victory over Polona Hercog. Kvitova triumphed in 2014 and 2016, and has won 14 of her 17 matches at the WTA Premier 5 tournament.

American Amanda Anisimova made an inspiring return to the courts by defeating last week's Guangzhou finalist Samantha Stosur, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Anisimova was playing her first match since her father and coach, Konstantin, passed away the week prior to the US Open.

Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka was ruthless in her second-round match, dispatching Danielle Collins, 6-1, 6-0, in just 52 minutes. Sabalenka broke the American six times from 10 break point chances.

Garbine Muguruza picked up her first match win since the French Open after advancing past wild card Peng Shuai, 6-3, 6-2. With the victory, Muguruza snapped a five-match losing streak and will next meet world No. 3 Elina Svitolina.
