Monica Puig will not compete in January at Auckland or the Australian Open because of elbow surgery.

The 26-year-old from Puerto Rico revealed she had surgery this week and while it was successful, it will postpone her start to the 2020 season.

"I traveled to New York... to have surgery on my ulnar nerve in my right elbow that bothered me for some time and gave me persistent pain," she wrote on social media. "The good news is... we found and fixed the problem."

Puig had a relatively trying 2019 season apart from reaching the semifinals of Charleston. Her coach, Kamau Murray, left just before the US Open to return to working with Sloane Stephens, though Puig has since brought on Philippe Dehaes.

High among Puig's 2020 targets will be competing at the Tokyo Olympics, where she is the reigning gold medalist.
