The story of this match began with another match -- a 6-7(6), 6-3, 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-1 French Open semifinal between Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray in 2017. The enthralling four-and-a-half hour encounter whipped the crowds into a frenzy and by the time Murray was beaten, both men were beaten up.

Murray would have hip surgery, Wawrinka would have knee surgery, and both would point back to this match as a crucial junction in their injury problems.

"Amazing to be back playing against him in a final like that," Murray told the crowd following a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 victory. "I thought it was a great match."

The distance he had come was captured during his quarterfinal win against  Copil, when Murray had walked to his chair and sobbed into his hands, reminiscent of his 3 a.m. win against the same opponent at Washington, D.C., in 2018.
