Battle of the Brits: Evans eases past Edmund in championship match

Dan Evans finished off a highly successful week at the inaugural Battle of the Brits event by easily handing Kyle Edmund a 6-3, 6-2 loss in the championship match. Both players had won all four of their singles matches heading into the final, but it was Evans who sustained the same consistency on Sunday that saw him defeat three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray in the semifinals.

In just over an hour of play, it seemed to be more of a clinic rather than a competitive match. Evans moved the ball with the utmost precision, only making a total of three unforced errors.

The final match marked the third bout between the two Brits, and the first occasion that Evans has come out on top. His consistency not only completely wore out Edmund, but the 30-year-old also showed the world he has much more left in the tank.

"Thanks to everyone who has worked on the tournament," Evans said during the trophy presentation. "All of the players have loved it and that's the God honest truth, everybody has been raving about the tournament. It's been a long week and a great week to finish. Hopefully we can do it all again."

Cameron Norrie was set to take on Murray in the third place playoff. However, James Ward would replace the former world No. 1, who withdrew with a shin injury.

Norrie came out firing and actively looked for opportunities to finish points off at the net. The left-hander would take the first set decisively, but Ward stepped up his game to present more of a challenge.

The British No. 3's focus however, never wavered. He continued to work Ward's forehand side by getting him into deep forehand corner rallies before attacking to the opposite side. Norrie saved a set point in the second set, eventually prevailing, 6-3, 7-5, at the Lawn Tennis Association’s National Tennis Centre in London.

"I think I'm just returning well and serving well and if you can do those two things, well then you're going to play good," Norrie said following the win.
