For the third straight year, Gael Monfils has pulled out of Munich (this time due to a groin problem sustained in practice). The Frenchman has been playing—and winning—a lot recently. (He reached the Monte Carlo final earlier this month.) The tournament's second seed said that the unusually cold weather may have been the cause.

Winter Weather Continues in Munich

Monfils may have a point, as cold weather has continued to hinder play at the outdoor clay event in Munich. On Tuesday, snow and rain interrupted matches for four hours, with only one match seeing completion. The forecast shows more rain and wind for the rest of the week, with temperatures in the 50s (dropping to the low 30s at night).

Bjorn Fratangelo earned a wild card to the French Open after accumulating the most points at recent USTA Pro Circuit clay-court events. Ranked No. 117, he won the Savannah Challenger last week and reached the semifinals of the Sarasota Challenger the week before. The 22-year-old won the junior French Open in 2011, becoming the first American since John McEnroe in 1977 to capture the title.
