There were many reasons to be watching Sunday's Super Bowl (the Swifties are happy to have you, Andy Murray), but chief among them for Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula and Serena Williams was the Big Game's pop culture footprint.

The American trio, all noted football fans in their own rights, were among the millions who were posting up a storm on social media in reaction to the two headline-grabbing musical events of the evening: Usher's halftime performance and Beyoncé's announcement of her forthcoming album nestled in a commercial for media giant Verizon.

Celebrating the 20th anniversary of his hit album, "Confessions," in 2024, Usher dug deep into his rolodex for guest artists for the halftime performance, which saw the eight-time Grammy Award winner welcome H.E.R., Jermaine Dupri, Lil Jon and Ludacris, as well as a surprise cameo by Alicia Keys, who dueted with Usher for a rendition of their 2004 hit "My Boo."

Williams was ready for the performance before it even began, while Pegula delivered a glowing verdict on the pop-meets-R&B feast.

"Halftime show 10/10," Pegula wrote on X. "I love Usher, and bringing out Lil Jon, Luda [Ludacris] and Alicia is iconic forever."

Though Gauff was born 10 days before Usher's flagship album "Confessions" was released in 2004, the worldly reigning US Open champion nonetheless has a deep appreciation for his music.

But a particular highlight of Sunday's night's show for the 19-year-old was Usher's quick costume changes and active artistry, particularly when he slapped on a pair of roller skates and crooned his hit "OMG" while rolling through artist will.i.am's legs.

But all the surprises in the halftime show paled in comparison to the one dropped by Beyoncé, who poked fun at viral culture in a commercial for Verizon where she sought to "break the internet." The superstar eventually did, though, as the commercial ended with the announcement that a country-themed follow-up to “Renaissance,” her smash-hit 2022 album, which she referred to as “Act II,” will drop on March 29.

Gauff hailed the surprise announcement as "legendary," and fan-girled appropriately when the official X account for Verizon slid into her replies.
