Serena, Olympia become owners of women's soccer team

The National Women's Soccer League has announced that it'll have an expansion team in Los Angeles for the 2022 season, and its ownership group includes some names that will be familiar to tennis fans: Serena Williams; her husband, Alexis Ohanian; and even Serena's 2-year-old daughter, Olympia.

The team, still settling on a name and home venue, is for the moment calling itself Angel City.

"I am proud to be a part of this wonderful group (majority women!) working to bring a women’s professional football club to Los Angeles," Ohanian Sr. wrote in an announcement on Instagram. "As someone who spends hours kicking around a football with my two-year-old daughter, I want her to have a front row seat to this revolution."

Ohanian's statement also outlined the importance of increased visibility for women's sports, an area where tennis has long been a world leader.

Actress Natalie Portman and retired soccer standouts Mia Hamm and Abby Wambach are just a few of the other names on the star-studded list of owners.
