NEW YORK—Big Foe, meet Big Ticket.

Frances Tiafoe enjoyed a surreal opening day at the US Open when he came face-to-face with the NBA legend Kevin Garnett after advancing into the second round on Monday.

Video captured a heartfelt embrace between the two superstar athletes, catching Tiafoe by surprise when it was brought up in his post-match press conference

“I didn't know there was a video, bro,” he exclaimed after his 6-2, 7-5, 6-1 win over Learner Tien. “I need to see that.”

Tiafoe has enjoyed his share of celebrity shoutouts since his breakthrough major run at this event 12 months ago, openly “losing it” when he got a tweet from LeBron James in the wake of his Rafael Nadal upset. After exiting the tournament in the semifinals against eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz, he met former First Lady Michelle Obama.

“Some of that is super humbling,” said Tiafoe. “Obviously Big Ticket is a legend, so seeing him was super cool. He sent me a funny voicemail before the tournament. It's cool he's able to come out here.

“Diversity in sport speaks volumes,” he added. “Obviously it has people tune into the game that usually wouldn't. He's one of them, and many others. I have to keep winning so they stay interested. Obviously, I want to impact a lot of people of color to want to pursue the game of tennis. It's big shoes to fill but a great seat to be in.”

Tiafoe will enjoy another opportunity under the Arthur Ashe Stadium spotlight against Sebastian Ofner on Wednesday evening.
