Facts: Winter is a time for layers, but players can wear a base compression layer year-round. In August, Wilson launched the first tennis-specific compression wear line, the R2R, aiming to provide players with advanced base layer technology “for optimal active response and quick recovery.” The men's line consists of three pieces: A long-sleeve seamless crew (MSRP: $65), a short-sleeve seamless crew (MSRP: $55) and a seamless short (MSRP: $45). All three high-performance pieces are available in black and white (the latter in 2013) in sizes S-XL.

On the surface, the construction looks uniform throughout, but closer inspection reveals compression channels in high-stress areas. The seamless short, made of 94 percent nylon and six percent spandex, features framed compression in the quadriceps and hamstring areas designed to “assist the hamstring during flexion and extension” and reduce muscle fatigue. The crews provide a vertical channel of max compression built to support the deltoid muscle and rotator cuff.

Impressions: Wilson’s R2R line—the name states its aim to help players “respond, recover, repeat”—should appeal to the avid player who values high-performance apparel. The seamless construction provides a kinder, gentler feel that won’t chafe your skin. While compression wear may strike some as constrictive, mesh areas of “zoned cooling” at the center-back of the shirt and shorts aid in range of motion, breathability, and cooling moisture management. The moisture-wicking construction helps keep skin dry.

If you’re a frequent player prone to muscle fatigue, a teaching pro on court daily, or a high-level player embarking on a demanding off-season training program, R2R compression may well work for you.
