Product Profile: Adidas by Stella McCartney Barricade
It’s generally not news when a Top 10 player wins a first-round match, but Caroline Wozniacki had not passed that test in her previous four tournaments before advancing at Roland Garros. Given her tough opening opponent—she drew No. 37 Laura Robson—it had to feel particularly satisfying for Wozniacki to finally pass the hurdle, and with a convincing score to boot (6-3, 6-2). Much has been made of Wozniacki’s lack of success at the majors, especially when she held the No. 1 ranking. With her playing style, the French Open would seem to be her best opportunity, but her clay-court season has so far been one to forget.
When players hit a slump, they tend to look for something to change their luck—a different pre-match meal, a new playlist on the iPod, friends moving seats in the player’s box. If Wozniacki makes a deep run in Paris, perhaps she’ll thank her new Adidas by Stella McCartney Barricade shoes, which make their debut at the French Open. If it’s a Stella shoe, that means a little extra style than a typical Barricade. This entry has an all mesh upper in a flashy color (dubbed “electricity yellow”) that’s designed to enhance breathability and comfort. It’s not a case of fashion over function, however, as the shoe maintains all the support features players have come to expect from a Barricade shoe.
The shoe officially debuts at Wimbledon and will be worn all tournament by Wozniacki and all the other Stella McCartney-clad players, including Robson and Maria Kirilenko. It will be available for $125 on June 1 at adidas.com and tennis specialty retailers.
