With its easy power and surprising versatility, the first generation of the Ultra had arguably the most universal appeal of any line in Wilson’s arsenal. Now comes version 2.0, which is designed to increase that power, without sacrificing the feel and playability that impressed fans of the original.
The 2017 class of Ultras gets doubled in size from three models to six. It now includes the Ultra 100 Countervail (CV), Ultra 100L, Ultra 100UL, Ultra 105S (CV), Ultra 110, and Ultra Tour. Keeping with recent tradition, the collection sports the brand’s new design DNA for its performance racquets—bold color accents, matte finishes and a smooth, velvety paint. The Ultra showcases midnight navy and bright blue as its primary colors.
Two new technologies also update the frames. The Power Rib provides greater stiffness and stability around the throat for enhanced power and directional control. And the Crush Zone is a grommet system that increases ball dwell time on the strings for improved feel and more potential energy into the shot. According to Wilson, the Power Rib and Crush Zone increase the sweetspot of the racquet by 15%. Two of the models also feature Countervail, a special carbon fiber designed to reduce shock and vibration at impact. The 105S (CV) is the Spin-Effect member (fewer cross strings than mains) of the family.
Four Wilson-endorsed players—Gael Monfils, Feliciano Lopez, Borna Coric, and Madison Keys (see video below)—will debut their 2017 Ultra racquets at the start of the US Open Series. Four of the models from the line—the Ultra 100L and Ultra 100UL ($199), the Ultra 100 CV ($219) and the Ultra Tour ($249.00)—will be available for pre-sale at tennis specialty retailers (in-store and online) and on www.wilson.com starting August 1, with a worldwide release on August 15. The Ultra 105S CV and Ultra 110 ($219) will be available for sale globally on October 2.
