Gear Review

Andre Agassi has retired, but his Radical racquet has taken on new life. The latest version features YouTek, an umbrella term to describe two technologies. Notice a bigger sweet spot? The grommets are coated with Teflon so the strings move more freely on impact for a forgiving feel. And there’s a “smart” technology in the shaft called d3o, which Head says stiffens up when you need to hit with power (say, when crushing a ground stroke or a putaway volley), and flexes when you want to flash a little touch out there. Head is on to something. This Radical has the power of an oversize, so you can pound away at the baseline. No surprises there. But it also delivers the precision and slice-and-dice qualities of a midsize, allowing you to stick a volley or flick away your opponent’s screaming passing-shot attempts and place them where you want. All in all, the YouTek Radical OS is a terrific all-court weapon.

Bottom Line: The most versatile oversize players’ stick on the market.
